Teaching Points

  • Initial imaging modality of choice in the assessment of suspected stress fracture is a plain radiograph
  • Early radiographs are often normal
  • If there is ongoing clinical concern further investigations include;
    • Repeat plain radiography in 7-10 days
    • Nuclear medicine scan has high sensitivity for stress fracture but poor specificity
  • Further imaging with CT or MRI may be appropriate
