Teaching Points
- Initial imaging modality of choice in the assessment of suspected stress fracture is a plain radiograph
- Early radiographs are often normal
- If there is ongoing clinical concern further investigations include;
- Repeat plain radiography in 7-10 days
- Nuclear medicine scan has high sensitivity for stress fracture but poor specificity
- Further imaging with CT or MRI may be appropriate
