Teaching Points

  • Plain radiography is the initial imaging modality of choice, though may be normal in the early stages of disease. ‘Normal’ plain radiographs do not exclude osteomyelitis
  • A bone scan is highly sensitive and specific for the detection of osteomyelitis
  • Further investigations include a ‘Labelled White Cell Scan’, MRI and Gallium Scan
