In certain jurisdictions, such as the current Australian healthcare system, primary care physicians/general practitioners are unable to request certain imaging modalities such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The Editor has decided to include such modalities in the Diagnostic Imaging Pathways, where it is the most appropriate form of investigation. When these imaging modalities are necessary, this should be an indication for specialist referral. In circumstances where there are adequate substitutes for imaging modalities without referral restrictions, they have been included in the imaging pathway.
